Ultimate productivity booster – Happiness at Work

Posted in uncategorised by mecip on May 9, 2011

Taken from Alexander Kjerulf’s site :

Nape kita kene hepy sokmo??
The single most efficient way to increase your productivity is to be happy at work.
No system, tool or methodology in the world can beat the productivity boost you get from really, really enjoying your work.

Here are the 10 most important reasons why happiness at work is the #1 productivity booster.

1: Happy people work better with others

Happy people are a lot more fun to be around and consequently have better relations at work. This translates into:

* Better teamwork with your colleagues
* Better employee relations if you’re a manager
* More satisfied customers if you’re in a service job
* Improved sales if you’re a sales person

2: Happy people are more creative

If your productivity depends on being able to come up with new ideas, you need to be happy at work. Check out the research of Teresa Amabile for proof. She says:

If people are in a good mood on a given day, they’re more likely to have creative ideas that day, as well as the next day, even if we take into account their mood that next day.

There seems to be a cognitive process that gets set up when people are feeling good that leads to more flexible, fluent, and original thinking, and there’s actually a carryover, an incubation effect, to the next day.

3: Happy people fix problems instead of complaining about them

When you don’t like your job, every molehill looks like a mountain. It becomes difficult to fix any problem without agonizing over it or complaining about it first. When you’re happy at work and you run into a snafu – you just fix it.

4: Happy people have more energy

Happy people have more energy and are therefore more efficient at everything they do.

5: Happy people are more optimistic

Happy people have a more positive, optimistic outlook, and as research shows (particularly Martin Seligman’s work in positive psychology), optimists are way more successful and productive. It’s the old saying “Whether you believe you can or believe you can’t, you’re probably right” all over again.

6: Happy people are way more motivated

Low motivation means low productivity, and the only sustainable, reliable way to be motivated at work is to be happy and like what you do.

7: Happy people get sick less often

Getting sick is a productivity killer and if you don’t like your job you’re more prone to contract a long list of diseases including ulcers, cancer and diabetes. You’re also more prone to workplace stress and burnout.

One study assessed the impact of job strain on the health of 21,290 female nurses in the US and found that the women most at risk of ill health were those who didn’t like their jobs. The impact on their health was a great as that associated with smoking and sedentary lifestyles (source).

8: Happy people learn faster

When you’re happy and relaxed, you’re much more open to learning new things at work and thereby increasing your productivity.

9: Happy people worry less about making mistakes – and consequently make fewer mistakes

When you’re happy at work the occasional mistake doesn’t bother you much. You pick yourself up, learn from it and move on. You also don’t mind admitting to others that you screwed up – you simply take responsibility, apologize and fix it. This relaxed attitude means that less mistakes are made, and that you’re more likely to learn from them.

10: Happy people make better decisions

Unhappy people operate in permanent crisis mode. Their focus narrows, they lose sight of the big picture, their survival instincts kick in and they’re more likely to make short-term, here-and-now choices. Conversely, happy people make better, more informed decisions and are better able to prioritize their work.

The upshot

Think back to a situation where you felt that you were at peak performance. A situation where your output was among the highest and best it’s ever been. I’m willing to bet that you were working at something that made you happy. Something that you loved doing.

There’s a clear link between happiness at work and productivity. This only leaves the question of causation: Does being productive make us happy or does being happy make us productive? The answer is, of course, yes! The link goes both ways.

But the link is strongest from happiness to productivity – which means that it if you want to be more productive, the very best thing you can do is focus on being happy with what you do

Artist’s Comments :

From what I’ve seen, people who work a 9-5 job have a confined life. They go to work, deal with their boss, do the same thing everyday, and pretend to be happy. The cord in her mouth is disabling her ability to voice her opinion. Ironically, it is by a telephone cord which is a common way of communication.

Think the Gulf Spill Is Bad? Wait Until the Next Disaster

Posted in oil and gas by mecip on August 3, 2010

By Robert Kiyosaki

Posted on Tuesday, July 20, 2010, 12:00AM

The world knows BP is a disaster, a monster of a disaster. BP’s disaster makes Hurricane Katrina look like a rain shower.

Every time a TV news station shows oil gushing from a broken pipe — one mile below the ocean’s surface — the world gets sick. Scenes of oil-soaked pelicans struggling for life both angers and saddens us. The financial losses endured by small businesses and fishermen cannot be imagined, let alone conveyed by the media interviews. BP is a disaster with a scope beyond comprehension.

I was in England when President Barack Obama blamed and criticized BP for this tragedy. His criticism sparked the anger of the British. Politicians wanted him to tone it down, to be more careful in his choice of words. British Prime Minister David Cameron told Obama not to “go after BP for the sake of it.” Virgin’s Richard Branson said he was “kicking a company while it was on its knees.” Their concern was not for the environment or those suffering the ravages of this disaster. Their concern was for the pensioners who are counting on BP for a secure retirement.

On June 17, London’s Daily Mail ran a headline screaming, “Obama Bullies BP into £13.5bn Fund for Oil Spill Victims… but British Pensioners will Pick Up the Bill.” The British are angry with Obama for pressuring BP to suspend dividend payments and set aside $20 billion for the cleanup. Obama’s strong-arm position has not only affected British pensioners, who own 40% of BP, but American pension funds, who own 39%, as well. In other words, the economic damage of the BP disaster goes far beyond the Gulf. The damage is spreading to pensions, pensioners, and portfolios all around the world.

An Atmosphere Changed

While in London, I decided to go to dinner at Canary Wharf, ground zero for the next BP. Only a few years ago, Canary Wharf was one of the centers of the financial universe. Condo prices were sky high, offices were packed, and high-paid bankers filled Canary Wharf with wealth and excitement. Today, Canary Wharf seems to be dying. It has lost its vibrancy. Many restaurants and offices were nearly empty and there were few lights to be seen in those once-high-priced condos.

And Canary Wharf’s ‘BP’ stands for Bomb Production. Canary Wharf is much like AIG, a factory for exotic financial products known as derivatives. The problem is that most people do not know what these murky and mysterious products are — and that includes the people who make them or buy them. It’s why Warren Buffett has called derivatives “financial weapons of mass destruction.” That is how powerful they are. During World War II, a ship exploded while loading bombs for transport at Port Chicago, California. The explosion flattened everything for miles. It is said that the ship’s anchor, which weighed tons, was found more than six miles away. Derivatives — financial bombs — have the same power if they accidently detonate inside a bank’s balance sheet.

The subprime disaster was a result of financial bombs — derivatives — exploding in financial institutions such as AIG and Lehman Brothers, as well as banks and financial institutions throughout the world. After the bombs AIG manufactured exploded, AIG received $181 billion in taxpayer funding and immediately sent $11.9 billion to France’s Société Générale, $11.8 billion to Deutsche Bank, and $8.5 billion to Barclays Bank of Britain. U.S. taxpayer money was going to bailout banks around the world. During the last three months of 2008, AIG was losing more than $27 million an hour. That is how powerful these derivatives can be. The problem I see is this: There are many more such bombs still sitting in balance sheets all over the world.

Financial Bombs All Over the World

Military bombs are classified by weight: 500-, 750-, and 1,000-pound bombs. Financial bombs have interesting labels such as CDO (collateralized debt obligations), ABS (asset backed securities), and CDS (credit default swaps). While they sound exotic and sophisticated, when put in everyday language, a CDO is simply debt sold as an asset. And CDS, or swaps, are simply a form of insurance.

Since the insurance industry is strictly regulated, and the bomb factories producing CDS did not want to comply with insurance industry regulations, they simply called them ‘swaps,’ rather than insurance.

To make matters worse, rating agencies such as Moody’s and S&P (and even Fed Chairman Alan Greenspan) blessed these financial bombs as safe, sound, and good for you. It was almost as good as the pope blessing these products. In 2007, the subprime boom busted, and we know what happened from there.

The problem is that approximately $700 trillion of these financial time bombs are still in the system. While people watch the BP disaster in the Gulf, few people are aware of the other BP, the financial bomb production that is still going on. If this derivative market begins to collapse, we will see another BP disaster.

Can’t Clean Up the Next Disaster

Most of us know there is not enough money in the world to clean up the Gulf. The same is true with the $700 trillion derivatives market. If just 1% of the $700 trillion derivatives market goes bust, that is a $7 trillion disaster. The entire U.S. economy is only $14 trillion annually. A 10% failure, equating to $70 trillion, would probably bring down the world economy. As with the BP Gulf disaster, there is not enough money in the world to clean up the next BP disaster.

Could such a financial disaster happen? The answer is “Yes.” In fact, just as President Obama pressured BP into doing the “right thing,” he is also pressuring the financial markets to do the right thing. The president and our congressional leaders are pushing through financial reform legislation. My concern is that, if not handled delicately, it is this financial reform that will set off the derivative time bomb… the next BP.

Currently, derivatives are traded over-the-counter, also known as off-exchange trading. This means derivatives are uncontrolled, unregulated, and unsupervised. The proposed financial reform legislation is pushing to have derivatives traded through an exchange. This will bring greater transparency and control. My concern is, when this happens, the reform will reveal fraud and failures we do not yet know about today. It will be like turning on the light and watching the cockroaches (bankers) run for cover.
While it is commendable that President Obama holds the rich and powerful accountable, I wonder what the price will be.

BP wraps up Macondo cementing

Posted in oil and gas by mecip on August 17, 2010
Tags: ,

BP finished pumping cement to seal the Macondo blowout about 215 pm local time Thursday after receiving the green light from the head of US Gulf spill response team

Retired US Coast Guard admiral Thad Allen, who is heading the US Gulf spill response team, called the successful cement job “a major step forward” in a briefing with reporters Friday.

Allen OK’ed the decision to cement the well from the top after engineers determined that it would not harm the integrity of the well and would help make the eventual bottom kill through the relief well more effective.

“This is not the end but it will virtually assure us there will be no more oil leaking into the environment,” Allen told reporters during a briefing Thursday.

Allen spent Wednesday in Houston conferring with federal and BP engineers.

He said much of the discussion revolved around whether the drill pipe, which remains in at least some portion of the well casing, was intact, and how it would affect the cement job.

BP began cementing at about 830 am local time Thursday.

It came after a successful static top kill operation that was wrapped up on Wednesday.

Crews on the Helix Energy Solutions semi-submersible platform pumped 13.2-pound mud at about five barrels per minute over about eight hours until the hydrostatic pressure of the mud pushed the oil back into the reservoir.

Though it is not expected that any more oil will leak out of Macondo into the Gulf, Allen has been reluctant to dub well officially “killed” until the first relief well intercepts the bore and kills it from the bottom as well.

“This will not be done until we complete the bottom kill,” he said.

Drilling on the well was stopped during the kill and cement operations but likely will restart Friday after the cement in the well has cured at least partially, Allen said.

Crews on the Transocean semi-submersible rig Development Driller 3 have already back into the bore with a drill string and are at a cement shoe placed in the bottom of the final casing string.

After testing the blowout preventer, the rig needs to drill through the cement shoe before continuing down hole.

It will take about five days to drill the final length because the rig will stop about every 25 feet to locate Macondo and make sure the relief well is on target.

Once it intercepts the Macondo bore, crews will either verify that the well was successfully cemented and killed through the top kill or will proceed with a bottom kill and final cement job.

Transocean said Thursday that after that final operation, it plans to carry out subsea tests of the blowout preventer to pinpoint any malfunctions.

It will then pull the massive unit off the sea floor and take it ashore for further “forensic tests.”

The operation is expected to happen later next month or into October, the company said on a conference call Thursday.

Sime Darby unit slammed in graft report

From UPSTREAM (An O&G Newspaper) :

Upstream staff 20 September 2010 11:48 GMT

Malaysian services player today revealed that its energy and utilities (E&U) division may be guilty of “inappropriate conduct” in relation to a number of projects, including Maersk Oil’s Al Shaheen development.

Probed: Sime Darby's work at Al Shaheen

The news comes less than a month after Sime Darby’s general manager for marine and international projects, Zamri Mohamed Iderus, pleaded not guilty to charges of receiving bribes totaling 99,000 ringgit from a businessman for revealing information about company tenders. Zamri was also charged with abusing his position.

In the aftermath of a cost overrun scandal which emerged in 2006, a work group within the company carried out a forensic audit on projects carried out by the E&U and submitted its report to the board today.

As well as Al Shaheen, the group looked at work Sime Darby carried out on the the Bulhanine and Maydan Mahzam project with Qatar Petroleum, and two other projects.

The probe has found evidence that there may have been breaches of duties and obligations, and inappropriate conduct on a prima facie basis.

While the details of the report are confidential, the board said it will start legal proceedings and lodge reports with relevant authorities.

PETRONAS Carigali expected to award soon two front-end engineering contracts linked to two phases of re-development work at Dulang oilfield

Ranhill Worley Parsons is tipped to win the 20 million ringgit contract ($6.3 million) for Dulang Phase 1 development which involves modification to the existing facilities.

The deal when finalized will support Ranhill Worley’s bid for the Dulang Phase 2 deal, industry observers said.

The second half of the Dulang tender includes engineering work on three new wellhead platforms.

Key players in Malaysia, including Technip,MMC Oil & Gas Engineering and Aker Solutions are believed to be contesting for the deal valued at between 30 million & 40 million ringgit.

Dulang straddles two blocks operated by PETRONAS Carigali and the Malaysian unit of ExxonMobil.

Existing facilities include four separate production, living quarters and wellhead platforms and a 1990-built 870,000-barrel floating storage offloading vessel.

Production first commenced in 1991 and reportedly ramped up to over 50,000 barrels per day of crude and 45 million ft3/day of associated gas in the mid-1990s.

Gas produced is known to be high in CO2 content.

Dulang is among the 11 oilfields PETRONAS Carigali has earmarked for enhanced oil recovery last year

Malaysia and Brunei sign offshore pact

From UPSTREAM (An O&G Newspaper) :

News wires 22 September 2010 05:59 GMT

Malaysia’s Petronas and Brunei’s government have agreed to jointly develop one of two offshore blocks off Borneo.

Working together: Malaysia and Brunei agree to jointly develop offshore block

The offshore exploration areas, formerly designated as Block L and Block M and now renamed CA1 and CA2, were awarded to Petronas and Murphy Oil in 2003 but were cancelled in April after Malaysia and Brunei agreed that the blocks were not part of Malaysia.

Petronas and Brunei yesterday signed the production sharing agreement for Block CA1. Both countries hoped that the agreement for Block CA2 would be finalised soon.

“Both leaders noted that the signing represented a significant step forward in the development of cooperation between the petroleum authorities of both countries in this area,” the Malaysian government said in a statement.

Malaysia and Brunei also said there was potential for future cooperation beyond Block CA1 and CA2 and a possible joint venture in a third country in oil and gas exploration, reported Reuters.

From UPSTREAM (An O&G Newspaper) :

News wires 23 September 2010 06:41 GMT

Santos says Asia’s demand for natural gas will more than double in the next 15 years and offers significant opportunities for Australian exporters.

Oil Planet

The Australian company says gas demand will rise in the established markets of Japan, South Korea and Taiwan as well as the mega-markets of China and India.

But the biggest driver will be in the emerging markets of Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines.

“It is not just China and India where energy demand is expanding,” Santos chief executive David Knox said at a conference today.

“The established markets of Japan and South Korea, and the emerging markets of ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) are set for sustained periods of growing demand.”

Between now and 2035 Asia is expected to account for 48% of global population growth and 64% of growth in primary energy consumption, APP reported Knox saying.

“Notwithstanding the growth of China and India … it is the emerging markets … that will be the biggest drivers in Asian gas consumption over the next 25 years.”

Marine Well Containment Company (MWCC) has awarded a contract to Technip for front-end engineering and design of underwater well-containment equipment for the US Gulf of Mexico, a member said.

From UPSTREAM (An O&G Newspaper) :

Upstream staff 07 October 2010 21:30 GMT

The scope of the work includes system engineering and design of specific subsea components including the containment assembly, manifold, control umbilicals, accumulator, dispersant injection, risers, and flowlines, ExxonMobil said in a release.

Containment: Technip wins FEED for new system.

ExxonMobil is leading the engineering, procurement and construction of the marine well containment system for the group, which also include Chevron, ConocoPhillips and Shell.

A project staff of 100 people from the four companies is working full-time on the design of the new system.

“We are on schedule to develop this specialised containment equipment that will significantly increase the industry’s response capabilities in the Gulf of Mexico,” exec Lloyd Guillory said in a release.

“In addition to the construction of new equipment, we are continuing efforts to secure existing system components to be available for near-term use.”

The subsea containment equipment is designed to create a direct connection and seal on a subsea well to prevent oil from escaping.

The system will be equipped with a suite of adapters and connectors to interact with various interface points, including any well design and equipment used by oil and gas operators in the US Gulf of Mexico.

The new system will be able to mobilise within 24 hours and can be used on a wide range of well designs and equipment, oil and natural gas flow rates, and weather conditions.

The new system will be engineered to be used in water depths up to 10,000 feet and have initial capacity to contain 100,000 barrels per day with potential for expansion.

Assuming you gonna calculate NPSHa for the pump where the source is from the bottom of pump (refer to illustrate diagram).

NPSHa = Pressure inside sump pit – vapor pressure – friction loss – static head

So, how you determine the static head either:
a. From center line of pump to high liquid level
b. From center line of pump to low liquid level
c. From center line of pump to the bottom of sump pit

Give me detail explanation on why you choose the answer and why not the rest..

Total is primed to explore the deep waters off Sarawak after Malaysian state-run company Petronas awarded Block SK317B to the French giant.

From UPSTREAM (An O&G Newspaper) :
Upstream staff 22 November 2010 02:53 GMT

Under the terms of the production sharing contract, Total will operate the deep-water Block with an 85% stake, while Petronas Carigali will hold the remaining 15% interest.

Total is committed to drilling one exploration well, shoot 400 square kilometres of new 3D seismic data and reprocess 500 line kilometres of existing 2D seismic data.

Petronas said the minimum financial commitment is valued at $31 million.

Block SK317B lies in the eastern part of the Sarawak basin in water depths of between 200 and 1000 metres.

Previous exploration efforts were confined to the southern sections of the original Block SK317 and led to the discovery of the Layang gas field. The deeper water area remains mostly under-explored due to the different operational requirements that come with deep-water conditions, said Petronas.

An MBA and an Engineer go on a camping trip, set up their tent, and fall asleep. Some hours later, the Engineer wakes his MBA friend.

“Look up at the sky and tell me what you see?”

The MBA replies, “I see millions of stars.”

The Engineer asks
“What does that tell you?”

The MBA ponders for a minute:

“Astronomically speaking, it tells me that there are millions of galaxies and potentially billions of planets.”

“Astrologically, it tells me that Saturn is in Leo.”

“Time wise, it appears to be approximately a quarter past three.”

“Theologically, it’s evident the Lord is all-powerful and we are small and insignificant.”

“Meteorologically, it seems we will have a beautiful day tomorrow. What does it tell you?”

The Engineer friend is silent for a moment, and then speaks:

“Practically…it tells me that someone has stolen our tent

KAHWIN TIGA… KO MAMPU….

Posted in uncategorised by mecip on January 9, 2011

Seorang suami sedang mencari-cari helah untuk membolehkan dia berkahwin lagi.
Antara alasan yang diberikannya:

Suami : Lelaki kawin 3 baru lah sah
Isteri : Kenapa pula?
Suami : Cuba terjemahkan ke dalam Bahasa Inggeris, “satu” is one, “dua” is two, “tiga” isteri (is three). Baru betul dan sah!.
Isteri : Tapi abang kena faham Bahasa Inggeris, terutama tentang “singular” dan “plural”
Suami : Berkenaan apa tu?
Isteri : Satu tu “Singular”; dua atau lebih “Plural”
Suami : Contohnya?
Isteri : One car sebagai singular, two cars sebagai plural. Apa bezanya?
Suami : Ohhh… tambah huruf “s” untuk yang plural
Isteri : Betul tu. Sama juga la untuk abang
Suami : Macam mana pula boleh sama?
Isteri : Satu isteri abang MAMPU, jika dua isteri dah jadi plural, maka abang MAMPUS, tambah “s” je, kan?

How To Motivate Yourself – Self Motivation

Posted in uncategorised by mecip on February 20, 2011
Tags: ,

Taken from pick the brain site :

Staying motivated is a struggle — our drive is constantly assaulted by negative thoughts and anxiety about the future. Everyone faces doubt and depression. What separates the highly successful is the ability to keep moving forward.

There is no simple solution for a lack of motivation. Even after beating it, the problem reappears at the first sign of failure. The key is understanding your thoughts and how they drive your emotions. By learning how to nurture motivating thoughts, neutralize negative ones, and focus on the task at hand, you can pull yourself out of a slump before it gains momentum.

Reasons We Lose Motivation

There are 3 primary reasons we lose motivation.

1. Lack of confidence – If you don’t believe you can succeed, what’s the point in trying?
2. Lack of focus – If you don’t know what you want, do you really want anything?
3. Lack of direction – If you don’t know what to do, how can you be motivated to do it?

How to Boost Confidence

The first motivation killer is a lack of confidence. When this happens to me, it’s usually because I’m focusing entirely on what I want and neglecting what I already have. When you only think about what you want, your mind creates explanations for why you aren’t getting it. This creates negative thoughts. Past failures, bad breaks, and personal weaknesses dominate your mind. You become jealous of your competitors and start making excuses for why you can’t succeed. In this state, you tend to make a bad impression, assume the worst about others, and lose self confidence.

The way to get out of this thought pattern is to focus on gratitude. Set aside time to focus on everything positive in your life. Make a mental list of your strengths, past successes, and current advantages. We tend to take our strengths for granted and dwell on our failures. By making an effort to feel grateful, you’ll realize how competent and successful you already are. This will rejuvenate your confidence and get you motivated to build on your current success.

It might sound strange that repeating things you already know can improve your mindset, but it’s amazingly effective. The mind distorts reality to confirm what it wants to believe. The more negatively you think, the more examples your mind will discover to confirm that belief. When you truly believe that you deserve success, your mind will generate ways to achieve it. The best way to bring success to yourself is to genuinely desire to create value for the rest of the world.

Developing Tangible Focus

The second motivation killer is a lack of focus. How often do you focus on what you don’t want, rather than on a concrete goal? We normally think in terms of fear. I’m afraid of being poor. I’m afraid no one will respect me. I’m afraid of being alone. The problem with this type of thinking is that fear alone isn’t actionable. Instead of doing something about our fear, it feeds on itself and drains our motivation.

If you’re caught up in fear based thinking, the first step is focusing that energy on a well defined goal. By defining a goal, you automatically define a set of actions. If you have a fear of poverty, create a plan to increase your income. It could be going back to school, obtaining a higher paying job, or developing a profitable website. The key is moving from an intangible desire to concrete, measurable steps.

By focusing your mind on a positive goal instead of an ambiguous fear, you put your brain to work. It instantly begins devising a plan for success. Instead of worrying about the future you start to do something about it. This is the first step in motivating yourself to take action. When know what you want, you become motivated to take action.

Developing Direction

The final piece in the motivational puzzle is direction. If focus means having an ultimate goal, direction is having a day-to-day strategy to achieve it. A lack of direction kills motivation because without an obvious next action we succumb to procrastination. An example of this is a person who wants to have a popular blog, but who spends more time reading posts about blogging than actually writing articles.

The key to finding direction is identifying the activities that lead to success. For every goal, there are activities that pay off and those that don’t. Make a list of all your activities and arrange them based on results. Then make a make an action plan that focuses on the activities that lead to big returns. To continue the example from above, a blogger’s list would look something like this:

1. Write content
2. Research relevant topics
3. Network with other bloggers
4. Optimize design and ad placements
5. Answer comments and email
6. Read other blogs

Keeping track of your most important tasks will direct your energy towards success. Without a constant reminder, it’s easy to waste entire days on filler activities like reading RSS feeds, email, and random web surfing.

When my motivation starts to wane, I regain direction by creating a plan that contains two positive actions. The first one should be a small task you’ve been meaning to do, while the second should be a long-term goal. I immediately do the smaller task. This creates positive momentum. After that I take the first step towards achieving the long-term goal. Doing this periodically is great for getting out of a slump, creating positive reinforcement, and getting long-term plans moving.

It’s inevitable that you’ll encounter periods of low energy, bad luck, and even the occasional failure. If you don’t discipline your mind, these minor speed bumps can turn into mental monsters. By being on guard against the top 3 motivation killers you can preserve your motivation and propel yourself to success.
